Author Guidelines

The Journal of Universal Novel Knowledge (JUNK) welcomes original research contributions from all fields of inquiry. The following guidelines are intended to assist authors in preparing manuscripts that meet our editorial standards. Please read them carefully, as our reviewers certainly will.

1. Scope of Submissions

JUNK accepts manuscripts in any area of human knowledge. Submissions may be empirical, theoretical, methodological, computational, philosophical, or any combination thereof. Interdisciplinary work is not merely encouraged — it is the default expectation. Work that cannot be classified into any existing discipline is particularly welcome.

We accept the following article types:

  • Original Research ArticlesFull-length reports of original investigations
  • Review ArticlesComprehensive reviews of a topic (the broader, the better)
  • Short CommunicationsBrief reports of significant findings
  • PerspectivesOpinion pieces on matters of universal importance
  • Letters to the EditorResponses to published articles or general commentary
  • OtherIf your work does not fit any of the above categories, we admire your originality

2. Manuscript Preparation

2.1 General Format

  • Manuscripts should be submitted in PDF, DOCX, or LaTeX format
  • There is no strict word limit, though we appreciate conciseness (or at least an entertaining lack thereof)
  • Use 12-point font, double-spaced, with standard margins
  • Number all pages consecutively
  • Manuscripts may be written in any language, provided the authors also supply an English translation and a haiku summarising the key findings

2.2 Structure

Research articles should follow the standard IMRaD structure where applicable:

  • TitleDescriptive, accurate, and ideally intriguing
  • Abstract150–300 words summarising the work
  • Keywords3–8 keywords (we recommend at least one that would surprise a search engine)
  • IntroductionBackground, rationale, and objectives
  • MethodsSufficiently detailed for reproduction (or at least for a sympathetic nod)
  • ResultsClear presentation of findings
  • DiscussionInterpretation, implications, and limitations
  • ConclusionKey takeaways
  • ReferencesCited works (see Section 4)

2.3 Title Page

The title page should include the article title, all author names and affiliations, the corresponding author's contact details, any acknowledgements, and a declaration of conflicts of interest. Conflicts of interest include, but are not limited to, financial interests, personal grudges, unresolved arguments from conferences, and the suspicion that a rival is working on the same topic.

3. Figures and Tables

Figures should be of publication quality (minimum 300 dpi). Tables should be clear and self-explanatory. All figures and tables must be referenced in the text. We accept figures in all standard formats and encourage the creative use of colour, though we remind authors that a figure's primary purpose is to illuminate, not to dazzle.

4. References

JUNK accepts references in any standard academic format (APA, Chicago, Vancouver, IEEE, MLA, or any other system that allows the reader to locate the cited work). Given the universal scope of our journal, we acknowledge that different disciplines have different conventions, and we respect them all equally.

Self-citation is permitted but should be proportionate. Citing works from disciplines unrelated to your own is actively encouraged and may improve your chances during peer review.

5. Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo rigorous double-blind peer review. Each manuscript is evaluated by at least two experts — or, given our scope, at least two individuals who are experts in something relevant. Reviewers assess manuscripts on the basis of:

  • Originality and significance
  • Methodological rigour
  • Clarity of presentation
  • Contribution to the sum total of human knowledge

Authors will receive one of the following decisions: Accept, Minor Revision, Major Revision, or Reject. We aim to communicate decisions within 6–8 weeks, though particularly universal manuscripts may require additional time for the assembly of a suitably omniscient review panel.

6. Submission Process

Manuscripts should be submitted through our online submission system. Authors will need to provide:

  • Complete author information and affiliations
  • A cover letter explaining the significance of the work
  • Suggested subject areas (you may select up to three, or propose a new one)
  • The names and contact details of three potential reviewers

7. Article Processing Charges

JUNK does not charge any article processing charges (APCs). Publishing with us is entirely free, because we believe that the advancement of universal knowledge should not be impeded by financial barriers. We are funded entirely by the boundless enthusiasm of our editorial board and the occasional bake sale.
